I'm always researching questions for Designjet users everywhere...last week I set up a Designjet 500 (42") in an office and had a moment of looking less than brilliant when the user asked me to help him set up his CAD for this plotter. In all honesty I told him that I don't have any experience with CAD as I'm not a designer...and then I gracefully (I'm a princess after all!) exited his office. Now to make up for that I am posting a link to Tips and Tools for Using a Designjet with CAD.
I get lots of questions from people who want to use their HP Designjet to print on poly banners and make decals with self stick adhesives. HP made a great document that covers the more modern Designjets. Here's the link.
1. Determine what size the drawing was originally. This is the size you will want to print. Right click on the name of the file and/or open the file and click on FILE and choose PROPERTIES.
2. If the Preview Window on lower right doesn't show a preview of the original drawing in the correct size - change the paper size to a size that will accommodate the original drawing size. Note: D size is 24" and E size is 36" and F size is 42".
3. Set ZOOM scaling to 100% - Go to ADVANCED options to choose which types of sizes the software should show you. You can even make your own custom setting if you use the PAPER SIZES window.
I've just finished rehabbing my first Z2100. My son picked it up for a song and said, "Hey Mom, I bought you a present!" I had to spend $170 on a new power unit and bought a couple of cartridges as the plotter has EIGHT ink cartridges! Anyway she's back together and works great and I'm really impressed with the quality of prints I'm seeing on plain paper. Someone asked me today if it could print on self adhesive vinyl and I said I'd check on it. The answer is YES but only for indoor displays as outdoors it would fade too fast. When you are purchasing the vinyl look for water proof vinyl media formulated for pigmented ink. I'll be buying some ASAP and testing it...so stay tuned!
I write about common problems with older HP Designjets. I'm always available 10am to 10pm CDT to answer your questions!
